Workforce Development

£1m over two years was made available to allocate to workforce development.

The potential workforce for children and young people's mental health is both broad and diverse. However, many people who routinely come into contact with children and young people do not feel competent to intervene regarding mental health issues. If problems can be dealt with at an earlier stage, some situations can be prevented from escalating into more serious problems e.g. parental break-up, bereavement etc. Thus the workforce may extend from midwives (and their potential role in improving infant mental health), through nursery/early years staff, through education staff, community learning and development staff, guidance staff, youth justice staff, social workers etc. A major task is to help these groups of professionals feel more competent in the mental health arena, so that more appropriate referrals might be made to the stretched specialist services.

A short-term post was established to develop a longer-term strategic framework for workforce development, to identify the training and development requirements for that workforce and to oversee and co-ordinate the present workforce activity. Ian Seymour is currently in this post and can be contacted at: Ian.Seymour@nes.scot.nhs.uk.

New to CAMHS Teaching Package

New to CAMHS PACKAGE

The New to CAMHS pack was the first National training pack for professionals who were new to working in NHS CAMHS services. In October 2006, a two day ‘train the trainers’ event was held. Ten CAMHS professionals from across Scotland attended and these trainers went on to support a managed roll-out of the pack, teaching those who will act as facilitators (mentors) for staff undertaking the pack across Scotland. This was achieved through the offer of a number of one-day training workshops throughout the country. An evaluation of the pack has also taken place.
